Welcome to my new room at Pinecrest

Welcome to my new class at Pinecrest. After a brief appearance in grade 2, I am now in the junior/intermediate special education class. I have an amazing group of students who are emerging as real leaders in the school, accepting many of the challenges I toss their way including reading with the kindergartens, leading the character education assemblies, developing a cooking program and creating interesting bulletin boards related to a number of initiatives. I am also pleased to make the acquaintance of a little furry friend by the name of Bow-bo, who is basically the centre of our world in room 9teem. Check out our classroom blog at www.room9teen.blogspot.com for more information related to the class.

Welcome Back to Pinecrest

Welcome Back to Pinecrest Public School
Welcome back to school. My name is Ms. Debbie Legault and I am your child’s Grade 2 teacher this year. I have just joined the excellent team of teachers at Pinecrest and I am very much looking forward to sharing an exciting and rewarding year with you and your child. I have over 17 years experience. My family just recently re-located to Petawawa and I am very happy to be in your community. Feel free to contact me at Pinecrest. Usually it is best to leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible. Every month I will be sending out a newsletter, as well as a calendar of events to keep you informed. Also I use this classroom blog for students to publish work. I'm also always looking for volunteers in the classroom to share their expertise. In the past, I have had people share their painting, pets, bead making, soccer skills, dancing, henna tattoos, reading, cultural traditions and celebrations, and story-telling with the students. We would love to hear from you about your special skills and talents. I’m also always looking for help photocopying and filing. I look forward to meeting with everyone soon.

Snuggle Up and Read Program

You and your child are invited to join our Snuggle Up and Read Club”. There is no membership fee, no equipment to buy, just a promise to set aside ten to fifteen minutes most evenings to enjoy a book with your child. Here is how the program works.
“Snuggle” books may be borrowed one at a time on a daily basis. The books come from the leveled bins in the classroom. Your child will be matched with a bin that has books that are ‘just right’ for his/her reading level (books that are not too easy but not too hard either). “Just right” books have a few words that are unfamiliar but not too many to make the book frustrating. Most of the early books will have a pattern story to provide further support to the beginning reader.
Each night the children may choose one of the following ways to share the book with you.
*Listen to you read the book aloud. (In the beginning, until your child has built up a ‘sight-word’ vocabulary, this will be what will mostly happen).
*Help you read the book aloud. (This is the second stage).
*Read the book to you. (This is what you want to encourage, but not force.)
This choice should be the child’s and may vary each night. FIrst and foremost, however, your evening ‘Snuggles” should be relaxing and tension free, since you want your child to develop a love for reading.
You and your child may wish to reread the book for a few nights. If so, there is no need to return the book until you are finished with it. Rereading is important since it develops fluency.
When your child is reading to you it is important, in the beginning, to have your child point to each word as he/she reads it out loud. Later, as your child’s skills improve move away from finger-pointing.
If you and your child wish to join our “Snuggle Up and Read Club” please sign and return attached slip sent home with information sheet..

Ezra’s Something From Nothing

A long time ago Ezra’s Grandma made him a beautiful blanket. It was red. He loved it so much and carried it with him everywhere he went. It got very old and dirty.

So one day his mother said “ It’s time to get rid of that old blanket.”

Ezra said “No, Wait…Grandma can fix it.”

Grandma looked at it and she agreed. There was enough cloth to make a wonderful red hat.
Ezra loved his new hat and wore it all around. Soon it got very old and dirty. Then his mother said he should throw it out.
Ezra said “But Grandma can fix it!”
Grandma looked at it and she agreed to make it into a button. Ezra wore it all around until one day when he was playing outside he lost it.
Ezra felt sad but Grandma said, “It’s okay because we can sit down and make a wonderful story about it”
And that’s just what they did. So Ezra carried this story with him everywhere he went and even told the story to his friends in his classes.

The Force by the Primary Mac class

THE FORCE

It was a regular Tuesday in the MAC class. Everyone was excited to go to the computer lab. When they arrived they were all surprised by the sight of new computers. Zach touched the computer screen then ZAP…..the force came into his hand.

He decided to use the force for good things. At first he just helped his classmates turn on all the broken computers.

Ezra said “That’s cool!!!”

Then he helped the caretaker move the piano.

Billy, the number one Star wars fan exclaimed, “Now he’s using the force!”

But Zach wasn’t happy just using the force in the school. He wondered how can I use this force to change the world.

He went to his friends the Framptons and asked them what they thought he should do. They suggested he use it for good, instead of evil.

Zach had a plan. He decided to give the power to the Frampton’s because he knew they would use it wisely. And he was right. The Frampton’s took the power and used it to suck the cancer out of all cancer patients. Cancer was cured all over the world and all because of the generosity of very special boy named Zach.
