Snuggle Up and Read Program

You and your child are invited to join our Snuggle Up and Read Club”. There is no membership fee, no equipment to buy, just a promise to set aside ten to fifteen minutes most evenings to enjoy a book with your child. Here is how the program works.
“Snuggle” books may be borrowed one at a time on a daily basis. The books come from the leveled bins in the classroom. Your child will be matched with a bin that has books that are ‘just right’ for his/her reading level (books that are not too easy but not too hard either). “Just right” books have a few words that are unfamiliar but not too many to make the book frustrating. Most of the early books will have a pattern story to provide further support to the beginning reader.
Each night the children may choose one of the following ways to share the book with you.
*Listen to you read the book aloud. (In the beginning, until your child has built up a ‘sight-word’ vocabulary, this will be what will mostly happen).
*Help you read the book aloud. (This is the second stage).
*Read the book to you. (This is what you want to encourage, but not force.)
This choice should be the child’s and may vary each night. FIrst and foremost, however, your evening ‘Snuggles” should be relaxing and tension free, since you want your child to develop a love for reading.
You and your child may wish to reread the book for a few nights. If so, there is no need to return the book until you are finished with it. Rereading is important since it develops fluency.
When your child is reading to you it is important, in the beginning, to have your child point to each word as he/she reads it out loud. Later, as your child’s skills improve move away from finger-pointing.
