How Does It Feel To Be In A Your New Classroom

I didn’t know what class I was going to be in but when I heard I was going to be in Ms.Legault class I was so excited. I sat down with my class and I said, “I, Raquel can’t wait for school”. Even though 9:30 was bedtime, I was so jumpy for school! On Wednesday I had alot of fun. We did DPA for the second time, it was so much fun. I thought, “I wonder what we’re doing tomorrow”? The class ran around the WHOLE school and then we were streching. I saw my sister then the bell rang. We got our stuff and went home. Which brings me to today . Ms.Legault marked my work even after I was late. I feel like my friends and classmates and we made new friends this year! I feel like Ms.Legault is the coolest teacher ever. We’re having Art at the end of the day. Ms.Legault says that we’re having two activities for Art.
I love this class!
Sincerely Raquel

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE IN A NEW CLASSROOM

I feel confident and ok this year so far in my new classroom. I feel I can connect with people. So far I think Ms. Legault is an
awesome teacher. My group is a great, magnificent group. I’m so happy Ms. Legault put me in this group. This school year is going to be fascinating. I’m looking forward to learning about rocks and minerals, science, art and lastly music. This classroom has very interesting facts. I hope we raise enough money to go to Medieval Times. Hopefully we get to go on lots of field trips. My classmates are very nice to one another. In this class we will all get a special day. When it’s my special day I’m going to play my recorder. I know how to play two songs they are called “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “Turn on the Sun”. I can’t wait to learn more new songs for the recorder.
MS. LEGAULT... YOU ARE THE GREATEST
TEACHER EVER !
Sincerely,Teniola

Welcome Back to Grade Four

From the desk of Ms. Legault

September 4, 2007

Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the fourth grade! We are going to have an incredible year. I take education very seriously, but I also love to have a good time! We will be doing quite a bit of writing this year. We will publish some of our work in our classroom blog located at www.mslegaultsclassroom.blogspot.com. We are going to learn about rocks and minerals, animal habitats, pulleys and gears, light and sound, medieval times and Canada. We will be doing many Math activities including learning to play the game of Chess. A monthly schedule will go home to keep you informed of the up and coming events. We will be doing a lot of fund raising, as we hope to attend Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament like we did last year. This is an extremely educational and one-of a kind learning opportunity for the students, but it is very expensive. We will fundraise as much as possible but if students begin saving $5.00/month right now they will have more than enough to cover the cost in June. A web site I recommend to all parents to access is www.raisingsmallsouls.com. It has a wealth of information on parenting which I use with my own family. I know we will have a wonderful year at Braeburn. I look forward to meeting parents at "Curriculum Night" in September. Please watch for coming announcements.
Room 11 Policies and Procedures
Please have students bring in a bottle for water to drink in the classroom throughout the day. Water can be refilled during the day but should go home in the evening for washing. It's a vital nutrient for the body that kids don't get enough of AND it doesn't make the desks sticky during math... Students should also have an extra pair of running shoes at school. We will be involved in daily physical activities regardless of whether we have a scheduled gym period.
Homework
Homework is given to reinforce the lesson and help prepare students for the next lesson. Students will be expected to read every night for a minimum of 20 minutes and practice their spelling words. Students will also have some other homework in another subject area. Homework assignments and spelling words will be recorded in the planner, as well as on the classroom blog. Parents, it is very important that you review your child's homework every night. If you see errors, ask them to find them and correct them. If the student is unable to complete homework due to lack of time please record a note in the planner.

While your children are reading very well on their own, they will still get an ENORMOUS benefit from your reading to them. Many parents stop reading to their children when they can read independently. Research shows students of all ages benefit from being read to. When children are read to, they hear inflection and animation in the reader. They are exposed to vocabulary that they might not otherwise consider. And they see you reading- which is benefit enough. If your child is reading a chapter book, read a chapter to him or her occasionally. Or select a book together that is "above" fourth grade reading level, and read it to them for 15 minutes each night. When you get to a new word, ask if they can figure out what it means, or what other word would fit there... Talk with them about what they are reading; cast the characters with people you know and relate the story's events to similar situations you've encountered in your own lives. And enjoy the story together!

Parents, homework is one of your greatest responsibilities. Set a special time and place aside for homework nightly. Please remind your children to place their completed homework in their backpack the night before, with all necessary forms and supplies for the following day... especially during the first few months.

Homework Projects
Please remember, "it is the process, not the product" that is most important. I have seen parents create beautiful projects that were very impressive, but they deprive children of the benefits of creating them on their own. While your help is encouraged, and often required, please allow your child to come up with their own ideas. Ask questions like:
Where would you like to start? Could we sketch this out on scrap paper?
What do you think this will look like when it's done?
How do you think we could...?
What is your favorite... How could we incorporate that?

Fourth Grade Policy Students are required and expected to do all assigned homework. Planner is expected to be signed very evening. All reading needs to be recorded in planner with the title of the book and the author. If a student misses 3 homework deadlines, parents will receive a phone call.

Miscellaneous
As the budget is very tight at school I would like to ask all students to donate the following items to the classroom. If everyone contributes it should be enough to cover our needs throughout the year. It also lets the students take responsibility for the supplies therefore they tend not to waste.
Kleenex boxes
Paper towels
Soap (bar)
Ziploc bags

Parent Volunteers
Teaching time is very valuable therefore its hard to find enough time to do all the preparation. It would be helpful to have volunteers in the classroom to complete the following activities:
Photocopying
Small group reading
Small group math
Marking
Also if anyone has any skills/ talents/ knowledge they wish to share we always love to have people in the classroom do demonstrations. E.G. Dancing, Art, Storytelling, Henna, Paper folding/Paper cutting/ Knowledge related specific culture or subject areas

FINALLY, please remember... Knowledge is power. Grades are just letters.

Do your best and be proud of what you've accomplished!

Thank you for your partnership in your child's education!

Trip to Etobicoke Field Studies Centre

On May 8, 2007 Ms. Legault's class and Ms. Borselli's class went to the Etobicoke Field Studies Center to learn about habitats. It took about 10-20 minutes by bus to get there. At first we met all the staff then we changed our shoes. We then went up the stairs for a talk. After, in that room, we explored and we saw a turtle and a guinea pig. We also saw many real animals like a deer and a raccoon. After a talk about habitats we went back down stairs for our snack of oranges. It was then time to go outside to walk through the forest. We then made a cool habitat for a chipmunk with sticks, leaves, pinecones and snail shells. Later we went back to eat lunch. I got to roast a hot dog over the fire. We then got to roast marshmallows. After lunch we went into a room to read a story, then it was back outside to catch bugs in a net. My partner was Sophia. It was lots of fun and we learned a lot. Then it was time to go. We went back and got everything. The bus ride back was bumpy and fun. By Danielle

Super Hero Night

On Thursday, May 3 it was Superhero night at Braeburn. There were different groups. Ms. Legault's group was the hardest. I was in the purple group that started at Ms. Legault's group. It was an endurance, speed and strength test and it was so hard. We had to make up Superhero moves and we did a move called the suicide. We also got to meet Spiderman, who some people think was really Patricia's brother. Patricia was dressed up as Black cat. We got Super hero masks when we were leaving. Soiman was dressed up as Batwoman.
The next group we went to was the red group. The teacher was Ms. Dorozko. Danielle and Abdirashid were also there. The red group was the snack group. We had cookies and juice, while we listened to a story.
The next group was Ms. Townsend's group. It was the green group. In this group we were supposed to make a comic book.
The next group was the orange group led by Ms. Young. We were suposed to decorate our very own Superhero.
At the end we got a loot bag to take home. In the loot bag we got a comic book, a book, stickers, a pencil and some candy. It was a great night. By Chantel

The Great Turtle Race

Students in Ms. Legaults class logged on to www.greatturtlerace.com to cheer on their favourite leatherback turtle and learn about this endangered species. Abdirashid reported on Billie, as did Ms. Legault's daughter. Adithya reported on Drexelina, the same as Ms. Legault's son . It was a close race but Billie came in first and Drexelina came in 10th place. Check out the website to find out the results of the other competitors.

Ms. Legaults' Class Adaptation of A Midsummer's Night Dream

Hi my name is Metrah I am going to summarize our play that is based on Shakespeares play called A Midsummer`s Night`s` Dream. The play begins with Duke Theseus and Duchess Hippolyta talking about starring in the new show The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Hippolyta is very nervous. Suddenly Egeus, Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius walk in. Egeus is upset with her daughter because she doesn’t want to marry Demetrius. Hermia wants to go to Athenian Idol with the rock star Lysander. Duke Theseus explains to Hermia that she is going to die if she does not listen to her mother. She has until tomorrow to change her mind. Hermia bumps into Lysander and tells him what her mother said. Lysander tells her not to worry because he has an aunt that lives far away and she’s a makeup artist. She can change her hair and give her a new look. Hermia agrees to meet him there. Suddenly Helena comes speeding by and asks how they are doing. Helena asks Hermia to talk to Demetrius about letting her play soccer. She says everyone knows I am the best player even better than a man. Hermia doesn’t want to talk to Demetrius. They then tell Helena of their plan to run away. After Lysander and Hermia leave, Helena decides to go and tell Demetrius of the plan. On the other side of Athens, Peter Quince and his theatre troupe are practicing for Zack and Cody. Peter tells the actors their parts. In the Royal Fairy Castle, Oberon was mad at Queen Titania. Titania gives lots of attitude to Oberon. So Oberon decides to play a trick on her and calls Puck to help. He tells Puck to get some magic juice and put it into Titania’s eyes which will make her fall in love with whoever or whatever she sees. When Puck left, Hermia and Lysander entered the woods. Oberon found Titania asleep on the rose bed. He sprinkled the juice in her eyes. He also heard Helena and Demetrius close by. He felt sorry for her and asked Puck to sprinkle juice in his eyes to allow the first girl he sees to play soccer. Puck puts it in Demetrius eyes, but he sees Hermia instead, and he wants her to play soccer. She screams running away from him. Back on the stage, Puck watched as Peter and the actors were having problems on the play. He decided to play a trick and give Nick Bottom the head of a moose. All the other actors ran away scared. At the same time Titania woke up and she saw Bottom with his moose head. She immediately called him an angel and had her fairies promise to serve him. Oberon then came and told Puck to change Bottom back a human and to wake up Titania. She thought it had all been a dream. At the end Hermia’s mother let’s her go to Athenian idol and she becomes a big star with a hit song. Demetrius also lets Helena play soccer and they win the World Cup.

THE BOYS BOOK CLUB

Hi. My name is Abdirashid and I will be telling you a story about the Boys Book Club trip. The people in the Boys Book Club from Room 11 are Roman, Anosh, Ms. Zarkovich and Ms. Legault. From Room 12 there was Jordan, Ahmed, Johnnie, Kyle, Philip T, Philip D and Ms. Borselli. We were all ready to go but we had to wait for the Supply teacher to come. Her name was Ms. Mann. We got our passes to wear and we were ready to go. Then Ms. Legault found out the bus had not arrived yet so we had to wait. While we were waiting I showed the class a magic trick. I made the person on the five dollar bill smile and frown. Then the bus came. The number was 9255. When we were in the bus there were people already in from another school. Everybody went to the back of the bus for the bumps. I got very sick on the bus. On the way we saw Woodbine and we saw a big tent outside. I first thought it was a circus, but I eventually found out they were selling clothing. When we were driving the bus, the bus driver said we had to go to Beaumond Heights to pick up another school. Then we finally came to the Boys Book Club Conference at the Holiday Inn.
It was very big and it was easy to get lost. Ms. Borselli said we had to go to the Main Ballroom. While we were walking we saw a swimming pool. Then we went downstairs and I saw the most amazing thing in my life.....the bathroom. Just joking! It was an arcade. I was so excited but we could not go. Then we finally got to the main room and we saw Eric Walters. He told us that he was the author of many fiction books that have tigers and sports in them. He told us he used to coach basketball and hockey. Then he showed us all the pictures of the books he wrote. He told us to write abut what we know like he did. The next speaker was Jeremy Jerome. His brother was a NBA player. Jeremy wanted to be in the NBA so he could get respect. But eventually he discovered that he could get respect by reading and writing books, so that's what he did. Jeremy taught us a song about reading to succeed. When it was over we had lunch. We ate pizza with chips and orange juice. Some people ate chips on their pizza. It made me sick. Then when we were done we got to buy books. Then we were going to see an illustrator. It was so cool. He showed us a skeleton of his sister...which was really just a joke. Then he showed us some ways to draw a dragon. But before he started he wrote cat on the board. Everytime he read, he thought the letter C was talking to the letter A and T was waiting for the bus. Then he wrote chat on the board and thought the C was wondering why the H was talking to the A and the T was still waiting for the bus. Then it was time for him to draw the dragon. The first step was to draw the snakes skeleton. Then he put horns on its head. Then draw a beak and teeth. At the end you have to attach the lines. When we were leaving I got his autograph. Then we went to the main room and we saw Q-MAC. I went in front of the rows. Q Mac did alot of basketball tricks. I especially like when he got a pole and put the spinning ball on the top and he made it almost touch the ceiling. At the end, he handed out some cool prizes like head bands, bandanas, wrist bands, videos and books. Then we went to the last room to see the storyteller Aubrey Davis. He told us 3 stories: the story of Jack; Bagels from Benny; and Nazerdin. I liked Nazerdin. He was a funny character. He always acted very silly. I asked if I could have his autograph, but he said another class was coming. It was time to leave the conference. I reminded Ms. Legault the bus number was 9255. We had a hard time finding it, but eventually we found it. When we got in the bus, Ms. Legault handed out our loot bags. In it, I got a FM Radio attached to a pen and two books called Quit Cut and Fun and Games. When we got off the bus I said Bye to the bus driver and thank-you for driving us. I went into the class, got my homework, then went to French. Now here I am doing my homework and this is my journal of today. The End

Future Ace Assembly

On Friday March 23 we had a Future Ace Assembly and our class had to present it. Ms. Legault and Ms. Zarkovich made a plan and for two weeks we practised. Ms. Legault chose Metrah and me to do all the talking, and the introductions to the performances. On the day, we were both very nervous. But we did it. I introduced the assembly then Metrah introduced the performance. We did very well. I introduced Ms. McPhail to give out the Primary Future Ace Awards and then Ms. Legault to give out the Junior Future Ace Awards. Vladimir was given the award from our class. After that the crowd sang "Everywhere we go" with us. Finally me and Metrah announced the last few parts and then the performance was over. We did so well that Ms. Legault said that she will give us an extra gym class next week. By Adithya

Medieval Times Trip

March 5, 2007
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As part of the Grade 4 and 5 Curriculum of Early Civilizations and Medieval Times, we are planning a Year End Trip to Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament on June 6, 2007. This is an amazing learning opportunity for students. The cost of this event with a lunch and bus included is about $35.00 per person. The Grade Fours and Fives are committed to raising as much money as we can. We are organizing several fund raising events so far, including a Shakespeare play, pyjama day and hat day and have plans for several more. We are applying for funds from a variety of sources to help off set the cost. We would now like to encourage all students to start saving for this event. If they save $5.00 each month for the next 3 months they would have $15.00 to contribute. Of course, we are hoping to cover as much of the cost ourselves and we feel $7.00, would be a fair amount to ask from all students. Thank-you for your continued support for our school and our high quality programs.
Ms. Legault Ms. Borselli Ms. Townsend

Trip to Danny King of the Basement

Hi, My name is Danielle and on February 13, 2007 my class and the grade 3's and grade 5's went to the Lorraine Kimsu Theatre for Young People. It was downtown Toronto. On our way there, we saw the enormous, huge, big CN Tower, the Roger's Centre and the Air Canada Centre. Now Abdirashid will tell you about the play.

It began with a boy named Danny and his mom Louise and they lived in people's basements. One night the owner of the house was sleeping. Then the owners alarm clock went off and everyone in the neighbourhood woke up. So Danny and his Mom ran to the train station and took off never to be seen again. Then they arrived at Clinton Street. Danny wanted food so Louise bought eggs, bread and milk. Danny said don't waste any of our money on cigarettes. Then Louise said go in if you get cold. After a while Penelope came outside to throw out her garbage and she saw him. She asked why they were there and they said they lived there. Penelope didn't believe them, so Danny bet her her jacket that he did. Then he showed her his key and said "Jacket Please". Penelope got mad and said her mother would kill her if she gave him her jacket but she promised that she will be nice to his friends. The next day, Danny was outside and a boy named Angelo came out and they played hockey. When Penelope came out Angelo stopped playing and said if she's playing he would not play. Then Danny told Angelo about the promise Penelope had made. After that Danny let Angelo pick a game and he picked hockey. They started playing then Penelope said what do I do then Angelo said, "Be goalie". Penelope was not playing fair every time. Angelo tries to get a goal. She makes an excuse. Then it was getting dark. The next day Danny's Mom called saying her boss got sick and she can't go to work today. That day his Mom came and said it is important for you to know that your Dad doesn't live in the Rocky Mountains. Then Danny ran away and Danny's Mom called the police. Then they found him unconscious and brought him to hospital. Then they made him better and the doctor's said he could go home.
The play addresses the issues of poverty and homelessness. In Toronto, one quarter of the population live in poverty. You can visit the Theatre online at www.lktyp.ca. The play is on the mainstage from February 4 to 25, 2007.

Anansi comes to Braeburn

On Tuesday, January the 23rd we went to the gym and we saw three guests actors. They started the first Anansi play when all the classes came in. They talked about all the plays coming from Africa. Anansi is a very well known in Africa. My favourite play was Anansi andthe Moss Covered Rock. It began on a hot day when Anansi the Spider was walking in the forest. He bumped into a moss covered rock and he said, "What's this...A moss covered rock." He then fell down, asleep, for an hour. He did the same thing again and it happened again. He realized he could play tricks on people. He brought different people over and when they said "What's this...A moss covered rock" They fell over asleep for an hour. Meanwhile Anansi took their food. At the end the deer realized that Anansi was playing tricks, so he played it back on Anansi to teach him a lesson. Everyone laughed at the story. All of the plays were entertaining and funny. By Neha

Ms. Allman Shares Cocoa Beans

On Friday, January 12, 2007 our class, as well as Ms. Borselli's and Ms. Townsend's class went to the library to learn about cocoa beans from Ms. Allman. Ms. Allman had gone to the mountain part of Jamaica during the holiday and brought back cocoa beans to share with us. She talked about the cocoa beans. She said that first you cook the beans, then break the shell. Next you grind the beans in a mortar with a pestle. Once it has been ground into a paste you make a dough out of it and let it dry. You can then grind it up to make a tea. Kids in Jamaica are not allowed to drink tea or coffee, but they are able to drink the cocoa tea. By Chantel

When we walked into the library and I saw Ms. Allman with a cocoa bean, I thought we were going to be talking about our trip to the chocolate factory or the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Instead she told us about how her people from Jamaica made tea with the cocoa bean. I really liked it when she fried the beans, shelled the bean and we got to grind it in the mortar with the pestle. It smelled like dark chocolate. She said she would then take the dough, dry it and make tea. By Sophia

Ms. Allman first asked us what was the name of the nut she was holding. No one knew, then she told us it was an almond. Then she tried to open it but it was too hard. Mr. Cochrane finally opened it with a hammer. Then she showed us a cocoa bean that was as big as a tissue box. She had picked it in Jamaica. She cracked it open and let every one smell it. It smelled like burned chocolate. Then she took out some dried cocoa beans and fried them to soften the shell. She gave them to people to crack the shell open. Then people put them in the mortar and began grinding them with a pestle. Everyone got a chance to beat them. We went back to class. Ms. Alman is going to make a dough out of them and bring back in when they are dried. She may even let us try the tea. By Abdirashid

Storyteller Wows Juniors

On Thursday, January 11, 2007 Cheryl Thorton came to our school to present a storytelling workshop with the junior students. She presented several stories based on Ancient Civilization myths including a Norse Myth called Mistletoe, a Mayan Myth called The Hungry Goddess, and an Egyptian Myth (the first known Cinderella tale) called Rhodopis among others. Students were able to participate in the stories as actors using props and costumes. Cheryl told the story and gave directions to the junior actors on what to say and how to move. It was an awesome opportunity for students to display their dramatic talents as well as learn about the art of storytelling. It was a great lead up for the students’ as they get ready to do their Shakespeare plays. Watch for more details to follow on the Shakespeare plays!
